Our perspective

Business reserves

A considered view of funds set aside for future operating needs and longer-term business commitments.

Purpose

Give reserves a role.

A reserve may support a planned investment, a seasonal obligation or an unexpected need. Defining that purpose makes the conversation more useful than treating all retained funds as available for the same use.

Timing

Match access to responsibilities.

The need for accessible funds should be discussed alongside the timing of the commitments they support. Any future arrangement would require clear terms covering access, currency and charges.

Review

Revisit the assumptions.

A change in strategy, ownership or trading conditions can alter the purpose of a reserve. A useful review asks whether the original assumptions still describe the business.
